Numbers, chapter 7, comments: the tabernacle is set up

Numbers 7:1 ¶  And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them; 2  That the princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered, offered: 3  And they brought their offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle. 4  And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 5  Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service. 6  And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites. 7  Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service: 8  And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. 9  But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders.

Now there is a description of the offerings made by the rulers of Israel once the tabernacle was set up. There is a lot being offered here, probably weighing in tons.

Persons who had great wealth, great temporal blessings from God, were called to give first. This is a valuable lesson and should be preaching material if conservative American Christians didn’t worship wealth and honor rich people so much. My grandfather’s generation was convinced that the income tax amendment being pushed in the early twentieth century would only affect the most wealthy and not them to get their approval and yet today we complain about the working class and poor who might pay no income tax. They and most of us weren’t supposed to or at least that is how it was sold to the people. Only the top 3% of the population was subject to it.

From those whom God has given much He expects much.

This was the dedication of the altar, after that it was anointed. 89  And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.

Genesis established a shekel as some weight of precious metal.

Genesis 24:22  And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;

In Exodus 30:13 a shekel, a weight of money, was established as twenty gerahs as confirmed in Numbers 3:47 and 18:16. According to Strong a gerah was the weight of 16 barley grains or 5 carob beans. This standard of money appears to be called here the shekel of the sanctuary.

The first day of dedicated the altar belonged to Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah. Nahshon is listed in both genealogies of Christ in Matthew 1:4 and Luke 3:32.

When all was done God spoke to Moses from the mercy seat between the cherubims. What I have deliberately not done here is make a study of numbers listed in these verses and some prophetic importance that can be derived by an expression of numerology thinking. This is very subjective interpretation subject to fantasy, opinion, and questionable connections. While such exercises can be useful in a sermon to urge congregants on to some goal espoused by the preacher they have little use here in trying to move the narrative of God’s ministry of reconciling mankind to Him on.
