Psalm 99 comments; The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble

Psalm 99:1 ¶  The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved. 2  The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people. 3  Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy. 4  The king’s strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob. 5  Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

Thinking in terms of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15, Hebrews 1:3) who will reign I find this Psalm powerful.

Psalm 93:1 ¶  The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

Psalm 96:10 ¶  Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.

Psalm 97:1 ¶  The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

For verse 2 notice these verses spoken about King David with David as a type of Christ.

Psalm 89:20  I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:… 26  He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. 27  Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

His name is Holy.

Isaiah 6:3  And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Psalm 111:9  He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

Isaiah 45:23  I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

Romans 14:11  For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

Philippians 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Christ is the mightiest of kings who will execute justice and judgment in the earth, and all are equal before Him and He is higher than all.

God as God the Father, the Son of God or the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, all as one is the highest object of adoration and glory in the universe, seen and unseen.

Psalm 99:6 ¶  Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. 7  He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. 8  Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions. 9  Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

Moses, Aaron, and Samuel, among others, were great men of God, priest and prophets that called upon the Lord’s name and He spoke directly to them. Speaking to them in Exodus in the pillar while they kept His testimonies and commands, although imperfectly at times. God forgave them and yet brought judgment on their sins in their own lives. We should lift our Lord, our God up and worship Him for He is holy, separate and apart from us, worthy above all things to be praised.

Christ has been judged for us, in our place, and our sins are laid before the Cross at Calvary, and we are forgiven. This should cause us to praise God if for nothing else although there are an infinite number of things for which He should be praised.
