Psalm 96 comments; Praise God!

Psalm 96:1 ¶  O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth. 2  Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. 3  Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people. 4  For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. 5  For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens. 6  Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 7  Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 8  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts. 9  O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.

We are called to praise God and to witness for Him, to be a testimony about Him, to the whole world. We should be praising God in word and song.

God’s redeemed shall sing a new song.

Revelation 5:9  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10  And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. He is above all worshipped entities and, in fact, is the only one who actually anything as the gods of the heathen are mere idols, figments of their own heart’s imaginations.

God possesses traits of honor, majesty, and strength and beauty. He is worthy of the glory due His name, who He is, and all the earth should fear Him. As the Messiah to come, Saviour of the world, He is more than worthy of glory and honor.

Now compare this passage in 1Chronicles 16 which suggests this is a Psalm of David.

1Chronicles 16:7 ¶  Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren. 8  Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. 9  Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. 10  Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. 11  Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually. 12  Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; 13  O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones. 14  He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. 15  Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; 16  Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; 17  And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant, 18  Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance; 19  When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it. 20  And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people; 21  He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, 22  Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. 23  Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.

24  Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations. 25  For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods. 26  For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens. 27  Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place. 28  Give unto the LORD, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 29  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his

name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. 30  Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved. 31  Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth. 32  Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein. 33  Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth. 34  O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. 35  And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise. 36  Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD.

God is greater than all that are considered gods by the heathen.

1Corinthians 8:4 ¶  As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. 5  For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) 6  But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

For God is the Creator of all things.

Hebrews 1:10  And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11  They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12  And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

All people of the world are called to give God praise and to fear him. As Christians we are to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice.

Romans 12:1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Revelation 15:3  And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. 4  Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

Malachi 1:11  For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.

Psalm 96:10 ¶  Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. 11  Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. 12  Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice 13  Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

The heathen are the unsaved, those not in the flock of God. We can see the millennial reign of Christ and God’s reign throughout eternity here as the world that He establishes shall not be moved and He shall judge righteously. Once the earth is recreated it shall be forever.

Isaiah 65:17  For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

2Peter 3:13  Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

The heavens and the earth shall rejoice as a consequence of this. The symbolism here is that the land itself, physical manifestations like the sea and living things like trees shall rejoice at Christ’s coming to judge the whole earth.

Isaiah 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Revelation 11:15  And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

How do Jews of today not see that in Isaiah 9:6-7 the child will be called the everlasting Father? Who can this be but God Himself.

Praise God for His amazing plans for the future.
