Bible study on Monday night - Comparing New Testament references using Old Testament verses

 In the gospels;

1. New Testament passage: Matthew 1:20  But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.21  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22  Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Context: Jesus’ birth

Old Testament reference: Isaiah 7:10 ¶  Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying, 11  Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. 12  But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. 13  And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? 14  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15  Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. 16  For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

Context: Isaiah 7:1 ¶  And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.

Comments: Prophecy given in context of Syrian and Israel attack on Jerusalem and Judah. Not fulfilled based on the text in the immediate circumstances. Clear prophecy of Christ.

Doctrine: The Virgin Birth of Christ.

In Acts;

1. New Testament passage: Acts 1:16  Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.17  For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. 18  Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

19  And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. 20  For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

Context: Acts 1:6 ¶  When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7  And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same

Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

    12 ¶  Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey. 13  And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

    15 ¶  And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

Old Testament reference: Psalm 109:8  Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

Context: A comparison of Christ and Judas? Psalm 109:1 ¶  «To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.» Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise; 2  For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. 3  They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause. 4  For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer. 5  And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

    6 ¶  Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. 7  When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. 8  Let his days be few; and let another take his office. 9  Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. 10  Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. 11  Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour. 12  Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. 13  Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. 14  Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. 15  Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. 16  Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart. 17  As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. 18  As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. 19  Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually. 20  Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul.

    21 ¶  But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name’s sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me. 22  For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. 23  I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust. 24  My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness. 25  I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads. 26  Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy: 27  That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it. 28  Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice. 29  Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle. 30  I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude. 31  For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.

Comments: Peter refers back to an Old Testament passage that compares the Messiah and His betrayer although the original context appears to be about a righteous man’s struggle against an evil man.

Doctrine: Judas’ betrayal of Christ.

From Paul's letter to the Romans;

1.New Testament passage: Romans 1:1 ¶  Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2  (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

Context: Paul’s introduction and credentials

Old Testament references based on earlier commentaries: Isaiah 40:2  Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins… 42:4  He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law… 52:1 ¶  Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean… Psalm 19:3  There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4  Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, 5  Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. 6  His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof… Psalm 68:11  The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.

Context: These are verses earlier generations of Christians have said applied to Paul’s statement as well as many others.

Doctrine: God has prepared His apostles, separated to spread God’s word.
