Romans 5:6-21 comments: we shall be saved from wrath through him

Romans 5:6 ¶  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. 12  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15  But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16  And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17  For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18  Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19  For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20  Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21  That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

When we were helpless in our sin before God Christ died for us, the ungodly. Who would die for a wicked person? Would you? Would you take a vile death row inmate who killed someone brutally and offer to die for them?

But, now we are justified by His blood shed at Calvary.

Acts 20:28  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Hebrews 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Hebrews 13:12  Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

The wrath we are saved from is God’s wrath, not the government’s wrath, the wrath of the Beast, or any other although we may be saved from those types of wrath by God’s mercy. We, who were the enemies of God in our unsaved state, have become His own, purchased with His own blood, and we no longer are under His wrath.

John 3:36  He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Ephesians 2:3  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Colossians 3:5 ¶  Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6  For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7  In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

1Thessalonians 1:10  And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

1Thessalonians 5:9  For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

Revelation 6:16  And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

Revelation 6:17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Revelation 11:18  And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

Many of us believe that when God’s wrath is poured out on the earth we will not be here, having been translated or, in modern parlance, raptured. I explain in my comments on Revelation the historical belief from the early church on in the rapture of the church and in the physical, millennial reign of Christ.

We were enemies of God before we received Christ as our Saviour who was offered by Himself to justify us and to cleanse us by His blood on the Cross and from the empty tomb. Adam brought sin into the world and death by sin and we all inherited it and Christ brought eternal life as a free gift of God for receiving Him as our Saviour. God knew Adam’s sin and the Law showed us our helplessness before God, not being able to justify ourselves. Go ahead, try it, try to not sin for a day and let me know how that works out for you. We lie, cheat, steal, deceive, are implacable, idolatrous, and so many other things on a consistent basis. It is hard to understand how someone could think they were hunky-dory just because they weren’t an ax murderer.

You say, “that’s too much. You make it too hard to be a good person.” That’s right, it is too much. That’s the point. It is too hard to be righteous before God. Only Christ was righteous before God and we can obtain His righteousness as He is our righteousness and when we trust in His righteousness and not our own we can be saved from God’s eternal wrath.
