Proverbs 30, 31 commentary;

30 ¶ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. 31 The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

First, there is nothing in human wisdom or pretended understanding that can prevail against God. Our schools teach that mankind descended by evolution from apelike creatures and then all the way back to single celled organisms that somehow came into existence by chance. And yet, it is estimated that 90% of the earth’s people believe in some concept of God as a creator of all things. Human beings will argue about the nature of God, or what He expects or should expect from us, or what His standard of righteousness is but they pretty much universally believe in some form of God the Creator.

Psalm 19:1 «To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.» The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

We have spent trillions of dollars trying to overcome and overthrow what God has said in His word, to extend our lives and cheat death. But, at some point, unless the Lord returns for us, we will all physically die, just as He has said.

Ecclesiastes 8:8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war;...........

And;
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

On and on, mankind does his best to change the declarations of God into mere quaint sayings written by ancient men in an old book but again and again God trumps “science falsely so called”. At one time scientists said that the earth was carried on the back of a turtle or something like that but God said,

Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

Some of those esteemed men of wisdom long ago thought the earth was flat but God said,

Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth....

And even today those who would oppose God find themselves in a quandary. Inevitably what God says is true and what they temporarily believe is false. I can list dozens of statements men have made against God that God has simply beaten down.

In each of our lives we have, at one time or the other, chosen to deny God’s truth and suffered for it. When we were young we thought that we were exempt from the consequences that God had laid out for sin and look at us now. Our bodies and minds suffer those consequences. Our families suffer those consequences. We thought, not me, that won’t happen to me. But, no wisdom, no understanding, and no counsel can prosper against the Lord.

When we got older we still went against God. We cling to our possessions, our perceived social status, our entertainments, our careers, our health, and our families placing all of them ahead of our worship of God and God can take any of them any time He wants us to start looking up.

A dozen or more times a day we make decisions that if one were to examine them carefully to see if they revealed trust and faith in Christ they would find none. And yet, we claim to be Christians and followers of Christ.

Everything you do against God or against His words in this Book will be like a water buffalo running into a thick, brick wall over and over. Or better yet, like a puff of smoke threatening to overcome a mountain. You who stand against God; you may have been a powerful athlete in high school but you are going to be a sick, old man barely able to stand up on his own one day, if you live. You may have been the prettiest girl you ever met but one day you will be bent over needing someone to lean on. You may have had a great job, a fine intellect, and loads of money but one day your flesh will be lying in a casket, awaiting burial and there will be absolutely nothing that your job, intellect, or cash will be able to do to stop that from happening.

No doctor, no philosopher, and no man of letters has anything to offer you that will permit you to stand against God. In the end, if you reject salvation by and through the Lord Jesus Christ, you will descend into a sinner’s Hell able only to shout “AMEN!!!!!!” as you know you deserve to be let go to that natural fate of all mankind without Christ.

Our weapons of war, the horse and chariot, armor and sword of long ago or the automatic rifles and hand grenades, fighter jets and nuclear weapons of today will be useless, a pathetic joke against God. You may be the greatest warrior of all time but only God can keep you alive in the day of battle. Without God’s hand of protection and safety on them, the bravest and the best go down into death, bodies broken and torn, just as the most cowardly and the worst.

We live by insurance actuarial tables and medical doctors and safety features; low fat diets, prescription medications, seat and shoulder belts, ground fault switches, airbags, parachutes, safety harnesses, helmets and chest protectors but none of it means a thing if the Lord doesn’t protect you.

So, there are two things you will always fail against, and that miserably and even suddenly and without remedy. One is God’s counsel, His doctrine. Two is looking to anything for protection and safety other than God.

Don’t get me wrong. It is wise to eat right, to exercise, to wear your seatbelts, to put on a helmet, and to practice safety just as it is to avail yourself of the latest technology and science to keep you alive and healthy. No one has said that it is Godly to be reckless, foolhardy, and stupid. The point of this Proverb is just to remember, you can’t stand against God and you are a fool if you think anything on this earth will keep you alive in that day.
