The writings of Luke the physician starting with his version of the gospel - Luke 13:23-30 comments: strait is the gate and narrow is the way

Luke 13:23 ¶  Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, 24  Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. 25  When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: 26  Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. 27  But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. 28  There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. 29  And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. 30  And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.

Here, based on the context, seems to be a direct attack on Israel’s unfaithfulness. Verses 28 and 29 show that this passage is referring to them and to the multitudes of Gentiles who will believe and turn to God through Christ. It is also clear that many people who claim to be Christians are not and this will be sorted out in time. It is possible to attend church, even to pray and read your Bible, and no more have a heart of faith and belief than someone who claims to be an atheist.

2Corinthians 13:5  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

The Jews here who do not come into the kingdom of God are said to be workers of iniquity. This is a phrase used frequently in the Old Testament writings. In the following it is evildoers.

Psalm 37:1  « A Psalm of David. » Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

The trouble with the religious elite of Christ’s day on earth was that their disobedience to the spirit of God’s commands expressed itself by their creating volumes of rules and regulations that had nothing to do with Him but only their own self-righteousness and that their actions prevented others from believing in faith. This is not unlike many Protestant Fundamentalists today in America.

Matthew 23:15  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Jesus makes it clear here that there is a limit to God’s forbearance and patience and there will come a time when they will plead too late to enter into God’s abode.

Exodus 29:38-46 comments: God will meet with the children of Israel in the tabernacle

Exodus 29:38 ¶  Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually. 39  The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even: 40  And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering. 41  And the other lamb thou shalt offer at even, and shalt do thereto according to the meat offering of the morning, and according to the drink offering thereof, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD. 42  This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee. 43  And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory. 44  And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar: I will sanctify also both Aaron and his sons, to minister to me in the priest’s office. 45  And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. 46  And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God.

Here is an important point to be made in verse 43. The tabernacle is sanctified or set apart for God’s service by God’s glory present within it.

We are sanctified, as the living temple of the Holy Ghost, by God’s presence inside of us. I think it would not hurt to review some facts again that I’ve touched on before.
First, understand that Satan is the god, little ‘g’, of this fallen world.

2Corinthians 4:4  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The Kingdom of God, our Creator, is not visible to the world like human kingdoms. It is within the believers making all state-churches and so-called Christian nations of history counterfeit works of Satan.

John 18:36  Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Luke 17:21  Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

We have the Spirit of God, which is the Holy Spirit, which is also called the Spirit of Christ, living inside of us.
John 14:23  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Romans 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 ¶  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

We are the temple of God, if we belong to Him.

1Corinthians 3:16 ¶  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

1Corinthians 6:19  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

2Corinthians 6:16  And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

You and I have seen previously that we can neither pray nor worship in a way that is pleasing to God without His involvement, cleansing our prayer and our worship to make it suitable to Him. We do not save ourselves nor do we keep ourselves saved. It is God who makes us presentable to Him. It is Christ, the Son, who makes us acceptable to God the Father by means of the Holy Ghost, all three parts of the Godhead, working in us by the agency of the Holy Spirit.
And so here, it is God’s presence in the tabernacle that sanctifies the tabernacle, with God willing to enter into it when obedience is satisfied by what He has commanded. In the case of the Christian, whether he be Jew or non-Jew, a Gentile this is what is required.
John 6:28 ¶  Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29  Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

God did not want to just carve out a people from the mass of humanity through Abraham and his descendants, the Hebrews. He wanted to live among them, to move about in the place where they moved. He wanted to experience them close up and personal, not just in the way He does as He directs every cell function and heartbeat and all reality but also in the reality that they experienced. It is important to God to experience our reality and to live in the space in which we live. He wants to know His people intimately, not just as a distant figure, untouchable and unapproachable.
Revelation 21:3  And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

The institutional church of history whether it be Roman Catholic, Anglican, or Baptist has tried to restrict this desire of God to have a relationship with His people. They tried and try to restrict access to God, to the people experiencing the presence of God, to the church organization only whether it be a catechism of the Roman Catholic Church insisting that the Holy Spirit only operates within the church organization not the individual believer or a Baptist saying that God only speaks to his people through the sermon on Sunday morning. God indwells you for a reason and He wants to experience you without the restraint of a go-between which is why He provided Himself as the go-between, the mediator.
With regard to measurements a hin is, according to Strong’s, about 5 quarts to 1.5 gallons or roughly 6 liters. Some authorities say a tenth deal of flour was the equivalent of 6 pints. I’m sure we cannot be certain with these measurements and would expect to find conflicting statements, much as we would in trying to understand what a cubit was.

The writings of Luke the physician starting with his version of the gospel - Luke 13:18-22 comments: the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Heaven

Luke 13:18 ¶  Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? 19  It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it. 20  And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21  It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. 22  And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

Notice how Matthew writes these using the phrase Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew 13 and then note the other cross-references between the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven, used only by Matthew who also uses the Kingdom of God. Evangelicals have often said these two phrases must refer to different things and argue that the Kingdom of Heaven has to refer to the physical millennium of Christ’s thousand-year reign. However, there are plenty of references to Christ’s reign on earth before the Great White Throne judgment of Revelation 20:11. Using cross-referencing as a guide rather than mere opinion and denominational dogma let’s examine and compare the two phrases.

Matthew 19:23 ¶  Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24  And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Matthew 11:11  Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12  And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

With;
Luke 7:28  For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
…then…
Matthew 13:10  And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11  He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

With;
Mark 4:10  And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. 11  And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

And…
Matthew 13:31  Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32  Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

With…

Mark 4:30  And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? 31  It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: 32  But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.

And…

Matthew 13:33  Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

With…

Luke 13:20  And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21  It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

[see comments on Luke 12:41-53]

And…

Matthew 18:3  And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4  Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

With…

Mark 10:14  But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15  Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

Luke 18:16  But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 17  Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

And…

Matthew 4:17  From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

With…

Mark 1:14 ¶  Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15  And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

And…

Matthew 5:3 ¶  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

With…

Luke 6:20 ¶  And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

A mustard tree can grow as tall as 20 feet with a branch canopy as wide as it is tall with low branches just above the ground. The parable of verse 19 seems to be a prophecy of the unnatural growth and temporal power of the institutional church and how the fowls of the air, notable as types of Satan in Mark 4:4 and 15 become a part of it hiding either within its branches or in its shadow. [see comments on Luke 12:41-53.] A possibility of the meaning of the woman and the three measures of meal parable is found in those comments as well.

The more positive interpretations of these parables are that they represent the supernatural growth of the Gospel. The woman in this interpretation is then the church, the virgin bride of Christ. However, my opinion is that this presents some problems when Christ uses typology like fowls of the air and leaven, which have negative connotations in prophecy.

Another example of this type of reasoning is that some church traditions have the following character as the Christian church.

Revelation 6:2  And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

However, Christ comes with a sharp sword in Revelation 19:15 and the written word of God is likened to a sword in Hebrews 4:12. Which Bible character comes with a bow?

Genesis 21:20  And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

Who is Ishmael and who are his spiritual descendants? Think about it. If the character in Revelation 6:2 is the Christian church representing Christ on earth, which is supposed to have the fruit of the spirit, has no abiding country or kingdom on earth, and is to love God and their neighbors why is he followed by war, famine, plague, death, and Hell? You see how there are problems with that interpretation. It sounds like whomever first came up with that interpretation of the verse in Revelation 6 was trying to justify the extortions and murders of the institutional church of the last two thousand years.

In Luke here, look at the past dozens of verses. Jesus is giving warnings and negative statements, admonitions, and making His disciples aware of some realities about their present and the future. Just as the book of Job explains how painful reality will be even for the most righteous Jesus’ prophetic warnings rightly divine the events of the last two thousand years. We must remember that all reality is a production of God’s perfect or His permissive will no matter how horrible that reality might be. The book of Job explains that we will probably never know why God allowed ten million Chinese to be killed by the Japanese in World War Two, roughly the same amount of Congolese killed by the Belgians before World War One and before or why the Holocaust was allowed to happen or why a newborn baby has hydrochepalus and dies a horrible death. The book of Job and other books simply teach us that as difficult as it may be we must trust God, the hardest thing for a Christian undergoing a horror to do. He will allow what He will allow and He will make happen what He will make happen and we have to believe that He will make us understand His will when we are with Him in eternity. Putting a happy face on prophecy by taking verses out of context does not help us understand a fallen world under judgment. It certainly does not help us interpret God’s word so we can apply it daily.

No, I believe these prophecies, in keeping with the context, are negative.

Jesus is making His way towards Jerusalem.

Exodus 29:1-37 comments: consecration to the priest's office

Exodus 29:1 ¶  And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest’s office: Take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish, 2  And unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened tempered with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour shalt thou make them. 3  And thou shalt put them into one basket, and bring them in the basket, with the bullock and the two rams. 4  And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt wash them with water. 5  And thou shalt take the garments, and put upon Aaron the coat, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the curious girdle of the ephod: 6  And thou shalt put the mitre upon his head, and put the holy crown upon the mitre. 7  Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him. 8  And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them. 9  And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aaron and his sons, and put the bonnets on them: and the priest’s office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aaron and his sons. 10  And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock. 11  And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 12  And thou shalt take of the blood of the bullock, and put it upon the horns of the altar with thy finger, and pour all the blood beside the bottom of the altar. 13  And thou shalt take all the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul that is above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and burn them upon the altar. 14  But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering. 15  Thou shalt also take one ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram. 16  And thou shalt slay the ram, and thou shalt take his blood, and sprinkle it round about upon the altar. 17  And thou shalt cut the ram in pieces, and wash the inwards of him, and his legs, and put them unto his pieces, and unto his head. 18  And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD. 19  And thou shalt take the other ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram. 20  Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about. 21  And thou shalt take of the blood that is upon the altar, and of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon the garments of his sons with him: and he shall be hallowed, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons’ garments with him. 22  Also thou shalt take of the ram the fat and the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and the right shoulder; for it is a ram of consecration: 23  And one loaf of bread, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the LORD: 24  And thou shalt put all in the hands of Aaron, and in the hands of his sons; and shalt wave them for a wave offering before the LORD. 25  And thou shalt receive them of their hands, and burn them upon the altar for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour before the LORD: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD. 26  And thou shalt take the breast of the ram of Aaron’s consecration, and wave it for a wave offering before the LORD: and it shall be thy part. 27  And thou shalt sanctify the breast of the wave offering, and the shoulder of the heave offering, which is waved, and which is heaved up, of the ram of the consecration, even of that which is for Aaron, and of that which is for his sons: 28  And it shall be Aaron’s and his sons’ by a statute for ever from the children of Israel: for it is an heave offering: and it shall be an heave offering from the children of Israel of the sacrifice of their peace offerings, even their heave offering unto the LORD. 29  And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons’ after him, to be anointed therein, and to be consecrated in them. 30  And that son that is priest in his stead shall put them on seven days, when he cometh into the tabernacle of the congregation to minister in the holy place. 31  And thou shalt take the ram of the consecration, and seethe his flesh in the holy place. 32  And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 33  And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them: but a stranger shall not eat thereof, because they are holy. 34  And if ought of the flesh of the consecrations, or of the bread, remain unto the morning, then thou shalt burn the remainder with fire: it shall not be eaten, because it is holy. 35  And thus shalt thou do unto Aaron, and to his sons, according to all things which I have commanded thee: seven days shalt thou consecrate them. 36  And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin offering for atonement: and thou shalt cleanse the altar, when thou hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify it. 37  Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy.

Aaron and his sons are consecrated for the priest’s office. The Lord Jesus Christ is our high priest.

Hebrews 9:8 ¶  The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: 9  Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10  Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. 11  But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. 13  For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

All believers are priests.

1Peter 2:5  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

One way of looking at the difference between Aaron and his sons’ consecration and ours is that they were to perform this ritual to be prepared for God’s use. God Himself prepares us for His purpose. One focus of the Hebrew religion was man doing something to please God while in Christ it is God who justifies and man can do nothing without God’s effort. Man is not set apart by what He does but only what God does. As Jesus said;

John 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

First, in the act of salvation…

John 1:12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Then, in the operation that prevents our souls from being punished for the sins we commit in our bodies…

Colossians 2:11  In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12  Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

In keeping us saved in spite of ourselves…

Romans 8:31 ¶  What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32  He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33  Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34  Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36  As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37  Nay, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him that loved us. 38  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We tend to give ourselves too much credit for our sanctification and take too much on ourselves for our failures. Christ knows what a dreadful, arrogant lot we are.

Jeremiah 17:9  The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Luke 11:13  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

You don’t think He’d leave salvation up to you, do you? Aaron and his sons were made holy by their obedience in the things God commanded. We are made holy by Christ.
1Corinthians 1:30  But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption…

Unleavened bread, cakes, and wafers are called for. Smith’s Bible Dictionary says, “Various substances were known to have fermenting qualities; but the ordinary leaven consisted of a lump of old dough in a high state of fermentation, which was mixed into the mass of dough prepared for baking.”[1] It signifies corruption and unleavened bread was required to signify not being corrupted.
Luke 12:1b…Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Exodus 12:8  And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it…15  Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

And in a prophetic verse that may very well be talking about the hidden worship of the pagan goddess; Ishtar, Isis, Diana, Venus, Mary etc. polluting the three main branches of Christianity, although there are other possible meanings…
Matthew 13:33  Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

Animal sacrifices were important in the Hebrew religion but as they foreshadowed Christ’s sacrifice they are not required now.
Hebrews 10:1 ¶  For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2  For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3  But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. 4  For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 5  Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6  In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

They were not used as mere biological machines whose death meant absolutely nothing and were of no consequence. Let us remember God’s view of them rather than our sin-corrupted historical-cultural bias. Many times animal sacrifices are called a sweet savour to God.
Numbers 29:36  But ye shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD: one bullock, one ram, seven lambs of the first year without blemish:

The heavenly prototypes for all animals play a prominent role in the spiritual world.

Ezekiel 1:10  As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle… 10:14  And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of a cherub, and the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle. 15  And the cherubims were lifted up. This is the living creature that I saw by the river of Chebar.

Animals exist in the heavenly realm, the world of the spirit.

2Kings 6:17  And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

At least some types of them have souls and spirits, as tripartite beings like man.

Numbers 31:28  And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep…

Job 12:10  In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

Ecclesiastes 3:21  Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

They can have potential abilities of speech that are restrained, obviously for a reason, perhaps because of the judgment on the earth because of man. They also have memory of past things.
Numbers 22:28  And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? 29  And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee. 30  And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

And abuse of them is condemned…

Proverbs 12:10  A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

An atonement is necessary to repair a broken or damaged relationship. It is done in the form of sacrifices under the law.

Isaiah 59:2  But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

But, now, Christ is our atonement for sin, an atonement made by the grieved party rather than the guilty one.
Romans 5:11  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

As Christians we must understand that it is not only God that saves us and not we ourselves, but that God makes our prayers and worship acceptable, that He sanctifies us, and that He pays the ransom to Himself for our souls, makes the atonement, and not only that but the propitiation to satisfy His wrath at sin. Until we wrap our minds around these facts we will always be trying to do things for God to make us acceptable that He has already done. We will simply waste the time He has given us and deceive others who need to learn His truth from us.
Also, consider the wave offering heaved up lifted up before the Lord as Christ, in a manner, was lifted up for our sins.
