Genesis,
chapter 49
Genesis
49:1 ¶ And Jacob called unto his sons,
and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall
befall you in the last days. 2 Gather
yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your
father. 3 Reuben, thou art my firstborn,
my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the
excellency of power: 4 Unstable as
water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then
defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
Jacob
calls his sons together to give them his prophecies concerning their future
and, in doing so, the future of their offspring. This is of tremendous
importance in what is to come. We must look not only to the individual’s
future, but to the future of their tribes in history, and to the prophecy in
Revelation regarding the conditions under which they survive until the end of
human history even if they do not know themselves as political entities. DNA
studies like those on 23andme.com and other websites have shown us that our
actual ancestry may be surprising with details previously unknown to us. The
Bible, unlike most other books of the world’s important religions, is a book
filled with prophecy of the future, prophetic warnings and declarations.
Reuben
was Leah’s hope that Jacob would love her when she knew that it was Rachel to
whom he was emotionally attached.
Genesis
29:32 And Leah conceived, and bare a
son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked
upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.
But
Reuben had sex with Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid, her personal servant.
Genesis
29:29 And Laban gave to Rachel his
daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.
Whom
Rachel had given to Jacob as another wife.
Genesis
30:4 And she gave him Bilhah her
handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
Genesis
35:22 And it came to pass, when Israel
dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s
concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
A
concubine was a sort of secondary, lesser wife in this culture. This was not
ordained by God but part of what He permits sinful man to do which condemns
sinful man and reveals his weakness. God’s plan is for one man and one women to
unite in marriage for life.
Genesis
2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his
father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one
flesh.
Matthew
19:3 ¶ The Pharisees also came unto him,
tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife
for every cause? 4 And he answered and
said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made
them male and female, 5 And said, For
this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife:
and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore
they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together,
let not man put asunder.
So,
Reuben committed a great wrong by doing what he did. In the age of the church
Paul criticizes a congregation for permitting such a thing before asking that
the man be forgiven as he was deeply repentant and anguished over his sin.
1Corinthians
5:1 It is reported commonly that there
is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among
the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife. 2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned,
that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. 3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present
in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that
hath so done this deed, 4 In the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the
power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 To
deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the
spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a
little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
7 ¶
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are
unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old
leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the
unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 ¶
I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: 10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of
this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then
must ye needs go out of the world. 11
But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is
called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or
a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. 12 For what have I to do to judge them also that
are without? do not ye judge them that are within? 13 But them that are without God judgeth.
Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
Then;
2Corinthians
2:5 ¶ But if any have caused grief, he
hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. 6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment,
which was inflicted of many. 7 So that
contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such
a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm
your love toward him. 9 For to this end
also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in
all things. 10 To whom ye forgive any
thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for
your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; 11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for
we are not ignorant of his devices.
Would
it were that Christian congregations had a zeal against sin in their midst.
Today we tend to justify or ignore instances of people committing fornication
and other sins. There is little shame regarding sin against God in today’s
church.
Reuben
is judged unstable and weak and will not be the tribe through which Christ will
come to offer redemption to mankind.
Genesis
49:5 ¶ Simeon and Levi are brethren;
instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. 6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret;
unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they
slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and
their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in
Israel.
Simeon
and Levi are the ones who, through deception, slaughtered the inhabitants of
Hamor the Hivite’s city in revenge for Hamor’s son, Shechem’s rape of Dinah.
Jacob lamented their actions.
Genesis
34:25 ¶ And it came to pass on the third
day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi,
Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and
slew all the males…30 And Jacob said to
Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants
of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in
number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I
shall be destroyed, I and my house.
Again,
the prophecy for these tribes is not a positive thing based on the character of
their originators. As all mankind suffers from their inheritance of a
rebellious, sin nature against God from our first ancestor, Adam, so shall
these tribes suffer with the rebelliousness of their progenitors.
Here
we also have an example of how this Bible defines words. Anger’s quality is
fierce and wrath’s quality is cruel. Our anger burns hot and our wrath is
malicious and hateful. Wrath is thought of typically as vehement anger. But,
still they have a like quality in their use making them somewhat synonymous
from a Biblical point of view.
Psalm
37:8 Cease from anger, and forsake
wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
Proverbs
15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath:
but grievous words stir up anger.
Proverbs
27:4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is
outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
Paul
warns Christians;
Ephesians
4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and
anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Colossians
3:8 But now ye also put off all these;
anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
Anger
should not be allowed to turn into bitter wrath for a Christian. Don’t dwell on
it.
Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry,
and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Jacob
speaks to his soul in verse 6 warning himself not to take counsel with these
two as their way is violent and vengeful. There are similar warnings in
different contexts in both Old and New Testaments.
Amos
3:3 Can two walk together, except they
be agreed?
2Corinthian
6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together
with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?
and what communion hath light with darkness?
Proverbs
16:29 A violent man enticeth his
neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good.
Whatever
you think or your culture demands regarding vengeance the vengeance of Simeon
and Levi, more concerned with their own honor than an assault on their sister’s
person, was not approved, even though allowed, as most despicable and ungodly
acts of mankind are.
Here
we have the picture developing not only of the Hebrews but of a person in
general. In these two prophecies for these three men we see someone who is
unstable in his ways, lacking in moral control of his sexual impulses, violent
and vengeful, murderous even. It is not a pretty picture of humanity that is
being presented, much less of the Hebrews. And it continues.
Genesis
49:8 ¶ Judah, thou art he whom thy
brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy
father’s children shall bow down before thee. 9
Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he
stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?
10 The sceptre shall not depart from
Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him
shall the gathering of the people be. 11
Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine;
he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: 12 His eyes shall be red with wine, and his
teeth white with milk.
Back
in 29:35 it was shown that Judah means, “praise.” Judah is said to be dominant.
He is a lion’s whelp or cub, a young
lion. A word study of the name young lion
is interesting but not necessarily important to the narrative here except
that Christ is called The lion of the
tribe of Juda.
Revelation
5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me,
Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath
prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.
Judah’s
strength is underscored here and none of his weakness. Verse 10 is a prophecy
that Christ will come from Judah and will rule the earth. A lawgiver from between his feet refers to the scepter of rule. In
verse 10 by way of a parallel lawgiver
and sceptre are linked as synonyms.
Remember in verse 1 Jacob is referring to the last days. The Jew will be gathered to Israel which extends from
the border of Egypt to the Euphrates with Christ, from the line of Judah,
ruling from Jerusalem.
Genesis
15:18 In the same day the LORD made a
covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the
river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
Now
consider verse 11. Israel is referred to as a vine in places.
Jeremiah
6:9 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, They
shall throughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as
a grapegatherer into the baskets.
Hosea
10:1 Israel is an empty vine, he
bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he
hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made
goodly images.
Christ’s
kingship is acknowledged as He rides into Jerusalem on a foal, a colt of an
ass. First, the prophecy…
Zechariah
9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion;
shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just,
and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal
of an ass.
Then,
the fulfillment…
Matthew
21:1 ¶ And when they drew nigh unto
Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent
Jesus two disciples, 2 Saying unto them,
Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass
tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. 3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall
say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. 4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5
Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek,
and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded
them, 7 And brought the ass, and the
colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. 8 And a very great multitude spread their
garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them
in the way. 9 And the multitudes that
went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David:
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
10 And when he was come into Jerusalem,
all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? 11
And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of
Galilee.
(Side
note: Don’t be afflicted with the modernist’s mental disease of reading this
passage like you would read your car owner’s manual. Christ was NOT set astride
two animals of different heights at one time, a very uncomfortable if not
impossible thing to imagine. Compare the passages regarding this and use common
sense. When we say, “He led the soldiers into battle,” we do mean to say that
he walked directly in front of every soldier or was even near them. Christ rode
these animals, as they were both with him but He was on the colt.)
Mark
11:1 ¶ And when they came nigh to
Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth
two of his disciples, 2 And saith unto
them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be
entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him,
and bring him. 3 And if any man say unto
you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he
will send him hither. 4 And they went
their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two
ways met; and they loose him. 5 And
certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?
6 And they said unto them even as Jesus
had commanded: and they let them go. 7
And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and
he sat upon him. 8 And many spread their
garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed
them in the way. 9 And they that went
before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that
cometh in the name of the Lord: 10
Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of
the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
Luke
19:29 And it came to pass, when he was
come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he
sent two of his disciples, 30 Saying, Go
ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall
find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye
loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
32 And they that were sent went their
way, and found even as he had said unto them. 33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners
thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
35 And they brought him to Jesus: and
they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. 36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in
the way. 37 And when he was come nigh,
even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the
disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty
works that they had seen; 38 Saying,
Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and
glory in the highest.
These
proclamations of Jacob refer to not only Christ’s presentation to the Jews in
the early first century but to the end of human history when Christ returns to
rule from Jerusalem seizing the kingdoms of the earth, including what is left
of America, from Satan, who rules them now through the lowest sort of
individual. Shiloh, here meaning, according to Strong’s, “He whose it is or
tranquility,” a reference to the Messiah’s coming to rule the earth.
Isaiah
63:1 ¶ Who is this that cometh from
Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel,
travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness,
mighty to save. 2 Wherefore art thou red
in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
3 I have trodden the winepress alone;
and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger,
and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my
garments, and I will stain all my raiment. 4
For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed
is come. 5 And I looked, and there was
none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own
arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. 6 And I will tread down the people in mine
anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to
the earth.
Daniel
4:17 This matter is by the decree of the
watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the
living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it
to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
Luke
4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an
high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of
time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All
this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto
me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7
If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get
thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God,
and him only shalt thou serve.
2Corinthians
4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded
the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of
Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Revelation
11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and
there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are
become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever
and ever.
Revelation
19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture
dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
You
cannot separate the return of Christ to the earth from His rule on earth and
the destruction of the world system.
Verse
12 is a short description of Christ’s frightening appearance as He returns to
take control. Eyes that are red like wine and teeth white as milk. Here is
another description.
Ezekiel
1: 26 ¶ And above the firmament that was over their
heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and
upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man
above upon it. 27 And I saw as the colour
of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance
of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I
saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.
…and
another.
Revelation
1:13 And in the midst of the seven
candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the
foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. 14 His head and his hairs were white like wool,
as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they
burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. 16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and
out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the
sun shineth in his strength.
…and yet another.
Revelation
19:11 ¶ And I saw heaven opened, and
behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True,
and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his
head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he
himself. 13 And he was clothed with a
vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
Verse
12, according to some commentators like Gill, refers to abundance and
fruitfulness, the blessings of joy and plenty.
